This year is a particularly poignant one for Liberation Route Europe – which links sites in six countries while telling of the Allies advance through much of Western Europe in World War II – as it marks the 70th anniversary of the end of that conflict. Route spokesman Jeroen van Wieringen said during a Toronto visit that there is a calendar of events linked to anniversary. There are numerous Dutch sites revolving around the conflict, with Holland seeing pivotal fighting. “The chairman of our foundation said Holland must be the Normandy of the north,” van Wieringen said, noting Normandy’s commonly associated with World War II. There are hotel packages and guided tours for those interested in Liberation Route Europe. van Wieringen is seen here with Henny Groenendijk of the Netherlands Board of Tourism.
