The Island of Hawaii – is nearly twice as large as the other Hawaiian Islands combined. Its sheer size can only be described as awe-inspiring. Composed of six distinct regions – Hamakua Coast, Kohala, Hilo, Puna, Kona and Kau. As a direct result of the shielding effect and elevations of the large volcanoes Maunakea and Maunaloa, visitors to the Island of Hawaii have the distinct opportunity to experience all but four of the world’s different climate zones, including Wet Tropical and Polar Tundra.

THE ISLAND OF HAWAII BEACHES

The Island of Hawaii boasts some of the most stunning and photo worthy beach landscapes on earth. The beaches are incredibly varied, ranging from white to black sand, it is clear how volcanic activity has molded and influenced it’s beauty. There is so much to explore, from stunning resorts, to mountains and waterfalls. The Island of Hawaii is a great place for avid stargazers, as the entire Northern Hemisphere and nearly 90% of the Southern Hemisphere is visible from the island.

THE ISLAND OF HAWAII NATIONAL PARKS

The Island of Hawaii is home to five national parks – Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, Puukohola National Historic Site, Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail. Each is unique in its scenic beauty, history, location and natural and manmade treasures. The island is also home to a variety of lush, tropical botanical gardens and floral nurseries. It’s no wonder that the island was originally named “Orchid Isle”.

Mahalo!

We recognize the proper use of the Hawaiian language including the ‘okina [‘], a consonant, and the kahakō [ō] or macron (e.g., in place names of Hawai‘i such as Lāna‘i).
However, these have been omitted from this communication for the best online experience for our visitors. We realize the importance and continue to use them outside of the online platform.
