COMING UP: IT’S CARNIVAL 2023 IN CURAÇAO!
Vibrant parades are lined with beautifully decorated floats featuring mythical creatures, dancing to swinging music, in spectacular and colorful costumes. Stalls are filled with enticing local food. And above all, an infectious spirit of celebration and laughter covers the island. What is this whirlwind of wonder? The Carnival season has officially begun! Are you in? |
Carnival on the island of Curaçao lasts more than a month, with many parades and festivities for all ages. Don’t miss the biggest parade, the ‘Gran Marcha’ (The Grand Procession), Sunday, February 19th. Make sure you stay long enough to see the end of Carnival with the ‘Marcha di Despedida’ (The Farewell March) Tuesday, February 21st. |
Carnival has been celebrated on the island since 1901 and is steeped in spiritual mythology. At the head of these processions is the Carnival Queen. Resplendently dressed, she embodies Mother Earth and bestows fertility and peace. Parade goers also eagerly await the appearance of the Prince and Pancho, incarnations of Carnival’s rambunctiousness. No parade is complete without the villain, the Carnival King. King Momo is a straw-filled figure, symbolizing barrenness, sins, and misfortune. |
