A new national study of active US international travellers by Resonance Consultancy Ltd. has shown that American Millennials are changing the map of international travel – with Canada leading the way as the most likely international destination that Americans will travel to.

Overall, the top regions for future international travel are Europe (57% plan to visit) and the Caribbean (46%). In Europe, Italy (27%), England (24%) and France (23%) are the top destinations, while the Bahamas is the most popular in the Caribbean (13%), followed closely by a number of other islands.

“The most interesting trend when it comes to international travel is the growing impact of the Millennial generation,” says Resonance Consultancy president Chris Fair. “Millennials now account for 30% of all international travellers and they show much higher levels of interest in visiting less traditional destinations in Asia, South America and Central America than older travellers.”

Overall, close to one-quarter of international travelers are interested in traveling to Asia, with China and Japan generating the greatest interest. Canada is the country most US travellers are likely to visit, while Mexico is second at 28%. Among the 29% who are likely to travel to Canada, British Columbia, Quebec and Ontario are the top destinations within the country – each at 11% among all respondents.

According to the study, the Top 20 countries Americans plan to visit in the next 12-24 months are: Canada, Mexico, Italy, England. France, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Bahamas, Greece, China, Japan, Jamaica, Aruba, Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, St. Maarten, Switzerland and Scotland.

The survey was conducted with 1,256 active travellers 18 years or older with household incomes of $50,000 or more who had travelled internationally in the past year.
