Amtrak redefining the future of East Coast rail travel

Amtrak is calling their newly launched high-speed NextGen Acela train a game-changer for east-coast train travel in the United States.
The NextGen Acela was launched on Aug. 28 and it “will redefine the future of east coast travel, connecting the Northeast Corridor between Washington, D.C., New York City and Boston,” says Amtrak.
The train can reach a maximum speed of about 260 km/h and will use a new tilt system for a smoother, quieter experience. Five trains entered service at the end of August, with more planned for introduction in the near future. Amtrak says it intends to launch 28 new trains through 2027.
The new trains will enable expanded weekday and weekend schedules, and will provide 27% more seats per departure.
“NextGen Acela is more than a new train – it’s an evolution of travel,” said Roger Harris, president of Amtrak. “It will launch a new standard for American train travel.”

Passengers on the NextGen Acela will have access to onboard amenities like premium seating, premium light meals, extended legroom space, free high-speed WiFi, individual power outlets and reading lights. It is “everything today’s savvy travellers need to be productive along the way,” says Amtrak.
An enhanced dining experience includes fresh food and beverages available in the Cafe Acela, with access to grab-and-go fridges. Hot items can also be bought at the counter, and payment is by tablet. The cafe car also has some bar-style standing areas toward the back, but no stools or seats.
Business class seats get a hot meal service by cart. And a la carte meals are served by attendants in the First Class coach.
All seats on the NextGen Acela are assigned. There are two AC power outlets and two USB-A ports between each seat, and there are also reading lights in each headrest. There is space for luggage in overhead bins and larger bags can be placed at the front and rear of each car in luggage towers.
Introduction of the NextGen Acela marks a big step in Amtrak’s broader fleet modernization strategy, including more efficient long-distance locomotives, says an Amtrak release. In the plans are new Amtrak Airo trains, which will operate on the Cascades, Northeast Regional and East Coast routes.
Rail coaches will get upgraded interiors in the dining cars, sleepers and sightseer lounges, including new seat cushions, upholstery, lighting and finishes.
