Bermuda prepares for Hurricane Melissa  

The Bermuda Tourism Authority is closely monitoring Hurricane Melissa as a Hurricane Warning is currently in effect for Bermuda. Current forecasts indicate that the storm is expected to pass to the west of the island on Thursday evening.

Bermuda is highly experienced in preparing for and managing storm activity, and the island has a strong track record of resilience thanks to rigorous building standards, well-established emergency protocols, and coordinated response teams.

The Bermuda Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO), in partnership with government agencies, utilities, and community stakeholders, is actively preparing to ensure the safety and wellbeing of residents and visitors.

Conditions are expected to worsen this evening as Hurricane Melissa moves west of the area. Strong winds, hazardous seas, and dangerous rip currents are forecast to develop later today. Bermuda is taking all necessary precautions for the safety of its residents and visitors, the following emergency measures will be implemented:

  • The Causeway will close at 10 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30.
  • All public schools will be closed on Friday, Oct. 31.
  • All government offices will be closed until 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31 to allow time for assessment.
  • Ferry service will be suspended on select routes on Thursday, Oct. 30 and all services will be closed on Friday, Oct. 31 until conditions have subsided.

At this time, L.F Wade International Airport remains open, however, the airport is experiencing flight delays and cancellations and may close this evening as the storm approaches. Travellers should contact their airline or travel provider to confirm the status of their flight and make any necessary changes.

Visitors currently in Bermuda, or with upcoming travel plans, are encouraged to contact their airlines, travel providers, hotels, and local business directly to inquire about any specific changes in their operations.

The Bermuda Hotel Association offers a “Hurricane Guarantee” for travellers whose itinerary is impacted by hurricanes, providing penalty-free cancellations and potential complimentary stays for affected trips.
