The Canadian War Museum has been named as one of the world’s 39 must-see museums, in a list compiled by BuzzFeed, a popular US online community forum.

The War Museum is listed eighth and is the only Canadian institution on the international list. The news comes as the War Museum celebrates its 10th anniversary in its iconic building on Ottawa’s LeBreton Flats.

The list also includes world-renowned institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Vatican Museums in Rome, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, the National Museum of History in Mexico City, the Museo Picasso Málaga in Spain, and the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar.

“It’s both a delight and a welcome surprise to see our museum on this international list,” said Mark O’Neill, president and CEO of the Canadian War Museum and the Canadian Museum of History. “We thank everyone who recommended us, and see it as another testament to the quality and impact of our visitor experience.”

Each entry on the list includes a quote from a member of the BuzzFeed community. The one associated with the War Museum reads as follows: “Each section focuses on a different conflict, and you are completely immersed. You walk through no man’s land, storm the beach on D-Day, and walk through a Cold War bunker. Absolutely amazing.”
