Milestone travel surges as G Adventures kicks off Med sailing season

G Adventures is highlighting a growing wave of milestone travel as the Mediterranean sailing season kicks off. The operator reports that marine travel bookings have shown a 27% spike among Canadians, with an increasing number of couples and groups choosing the intimate, salt-air magic of a small-ship adventure to mark their most important life chapters.
According to G Adventures’ Skipper CEOs (Chief Experience Officers), requests for help with special moments, from sunset proposals to milestone anniversary toasts, have increased significantly compared to three years ago. Even more notable is the rise of the full-boat booking, where families or groups of friends take over an entire yacht to celebrate 30th birthdays, retirements, or bachelorette parties.
Dave Hunter, Sailing Operations Manager and previous Skipper CEO at G Adventures, said that: “Modern travellers are looking for moments that feel genuine rather than manufactured, which is why those special moments happen so naturally on sailing trips.”
Hunter continued: “We’ve had travellers propose on the bow of the yacht, on remote islands atop a hill, in a caldera with the famous Santorini sunset, on a private beach with no public access, you name it. There’s a special magic in tucking into a hidden cove near Positano or the blue waters of the Cyclades where the only witnesses are a small group of new friends and your Skipper who knows exactly when the light hits the water to make a moment unforgettable. It creates the perfect environment for something meaningful and memorable without forcing it.”
A large differentiator on a G Adventures sailing trip is the Skipper CEO (Chief Experience Officer), who often plays the role of part-navigator, part-magician, part meteorologist and part-undercover agent.
Said Hunter: “You’re a Skipper, but also a secret accomplice. I’ve run ‘covert operations’ at sea that involve specific ring-delivery timings, music cues, and distraction plans so the partner has no idea what’s coming. When everything comes together, the energy on the boat becomes electric. That’s the real difference on these trips. It’s not just two people, it becomes a shared, special moment with a built-in party.”
Boats, beaches and babies: Real tales from the tiller
- The hidden ring: “On day one a guest told me he had brought an expensive ring and needed a place to hide it and keep it safe,” says Kristen Oeyen, Skipper CEO. “He also asked for advice on where to propose, and I suggested the remote island of Iraklia. He did it, and she said yes!”
- The private pivot: “Whenever a couple asks for a special moment, I try to create a private world for them,” says Skipper CEO Ivan Borcic in Croatia. “I’ll take the boat to a secluded anchor spot and organize a shore excursion for the rest of the group, leaving the couple alone (with exception of the skipper) on the yacht with a good bottle of wine for a few hours of total peace.”
- The ‘un-Googleable’ beach: “I had a proposal in Paros where the stressed groom-to-be hid the ring in a champagne glass,” says Skipper CEO Marek Wilk. “It all worked out. The next day, the whole group agreed to do whatever the couple wanted, which involved a cute deserted beach only accessible by boat to celebrate properly.”
- The ultimate souvenir: Skipper Oeyen recalls a lovely couple on their honeymoon in the Balearics who contacted her nine months after their G Adventures trip to let her know their newborn baby had been conceived on board.
- The stealth birthday: “While not a proposal, I once had a guest quietly tell me about her friend’s birthday and how she always tries to hide it,” says Borcic. “So, I organized a dinner at a local restaurant and while they were out, I prepared a traditional Croatian cake and decorated the boat with balloons and candles as a surprise. It turned into a really special and emotional moment I believe she’ll never forget”
As for the recipe for a picture-perfect moment, Hunter says a good skipper always has some places in their back-pocket but Mother Nature always decides. Along with calm anchorage points, expert timing and remote locations, cliffs shooting out of the sea, water sparkling beneath a golden sunset on the horizon, and a private beach aren’t only scenic, they’re sure to provide a backdrop for lasting memories.
