Goway, Air New Zealand square off at annual cricket match

Air New Zealand still reigns…

The airline’s cricket team prevailed in Toronto on Thursday (Aug. 21)  in its annual match with Goway, which hoped to avenge its last year’s loss.

But Goway could make the case that it played a role in Air New Zealand’s win, said Goway’s Don Forster, who played on the Goway team and was quick to praise Goway sportsmanship, noting it lent the Air New Zealand team players so it wouldn’t be short-staffed.

“No matter who wins, Goway wins,” he said of Goway having players on both squads.

The afternoon game — the latest in a long-running rivalry — saw the teams competing in their crisp white uniforms before a travel industry crowd.

Air New Zealand’s Mason Spencer used the dinner following the game to praise the part of the world where his airline is based and has a large presence.

“The South Pacific is a special, special part of the world,” he told the audience.

Meanwhile, Team Air New Zealand’s Ben Peters dismissed any speculation that Goway may have actually won.

“We’re calling it fake news,” he joked.
