Statistics Canada reports that Canadian travel to the U.S. was up again in June

Statistics Canada is reporting that in June, the preliminary number of international arrivals to Canada — Canadian-resident return trips, combined with US-resident and overseas-resident arrivals — by air and automobile totalled 5.5 million, up 3.6% from the same month in 2025.

It also reported that Canadian-resident return trips from abroad by automobile and air — from the United States and overseas countries — stood at 2.6 million in June 2026, up 2.0% from the same month one year earlier.

Of note is that Canadian-resident return trips from the United States in June totalled 1.7 million, up 3.2% from the same month in 2025, marking the third consecutive month of year-over-year increase.

This rise was driven by a 5.2% increase in return trips from the United States by automobile in June 2026. In contrast, return trips from the United States by air in June decreased 3.8% from June 2025.

Canadian-resident return trips from overseas countries by air totalled 873,200 in June 2026, a slight decrease (-0.4%) from the same month one year earlier.

US-resident trips to Canada increased 5.1% in June, reaching 2.2 million. This marked the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year increase.

In June, US residents made 1.5 million trips to Canada by automobile (+7.6%) and 663,900 trips by air (-0.3%).

Overseas-resident trips to Canada were up 5.1% in June 2026 from the same month one year earlier. More overseas residents arrived in Canada by air (620,800; +5.8% year over year) than by automobile (53,500; -2.0% year over year) in June.

As for the World Cup, Statistics Canada reports that together, Canadian host cities Vancouver and Toronto are home to 13 FIFA World Cup matches from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
