A gift to save a child

With a recent Ipsos Reid poll showing that 77% of vacationing Canadians are “disturbed” by children working in the tourism industry — including the sex tourism industry — World Vision is encouraging travellers, and those who book them, to give a holiday season gift that will help end the deplorable practice. Each gift costs $75 and “helps to protect a sexually exploited child. The donation is used to support trauma recovery centres like the one we operate in Phnom Penh,” says company spokesperson Britt Hamilton. She adds: “When you buy this gift, you get a special card to give to someone to let them know about the difference that will be made in their name.” The program is part of World Vision’s End Child Slavery campaign, which launched last spring to raise awareness about child labour exploitation and trafficking.
