A Renaissance In Acapulco

Legendary TV show host Johnny Carson’s favorite hotel is under new management.

Acapulco’s long-standing Princess Hotel, along with fellow nearby upscale Acapulco property, The Pierre, has been bought by the owners of Acapulco’s Mundo Imperial property, giving them a weighty presence in Acapulco’s hotel scene.

The three properties collectively have some 2,100 rooms.

Yayoi Shibayama of the Mundo Imperial’s sales team says the new ownership is making improvements to the two new additions.

“They’re being renovated,” she said during an Oct. 18 Toronto event. “We’re very excited.”

The Mundo Imperial itself is found in the new Acapulco Diamante District, frequently cited by Acapulco tourism officials as proof that Mexico’s oldest resort destination is undergoing a renaissance, enjoying new hotels and attractions.

Meanwhile, Acapulco Destination Marketing Office spokeswoman Piquis Rochin said that while Acapulco is seeing new attractions added for visitors, it continues to promote the sides to the city that made it a pioneering presence in Mexican tourism.

“Acapulco is more like a traditional Mexican environment,” she said.

Much of the city’s tourism appeal revolves around its famed bay, which Rochin said has “no comparison.”

Rochin added that Acapulco’s famed discos and nightclubs also continue to be a cornerstone of its tourist trade, even as the city has built a family following.

“Acapulco will always be a party place,” she said. “For the young people, it will be a party place 24 hours a day.”
