Air Canada marked its inaugural direct service to Delhi, India with a sold out flight departing from Toronto last night (Nov. 1).

Representatives from Air Canada, Air Canada Vacations and Incredible India were on hand for the launch, which featured a red carpet, dance performance and treats for all passengers.

“From an economic perspective we believe this will be a very successful route. For the entire month of November we have very high load factors so the kick-off of this has been very successful,” Duncan Bureau, vice president, global sales, at Air Canada told PressToday. “There’s a huge Indian national community here, 1.3 million and 30,000 new Canadians every year from India so this route is incredibly important not only for economic development but also for tourism.”

The only non-stop flight between Canada and the Indian subcontinent will operate four times weekly, until it goes daily in 2016, aboard Air Canada’s Boeing 787-9 series aircraft.

“It will give a tremendous boost to tourism as well as for the people who are going every year to visit their families,” Anil Oraw, director, India Tourism, told PressToday.
