IATA reports that June passenger demand figures showed year-on-year growth of 6.0%. The robust growth, measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPK), is ahead of the 4.8% demand growth reported over the first six months of 2013 compared to the same period in 2012. It is also ahead of the 5.6% expansion in capacity for June over the previous year. This pushed the passenger load factor to 81.7%. WESTJET BY THE NUMBERS
WestJet has reported second quarter net earnings of $44.7 million, or $0.34 per diluted share. Those results compare with the net earnings of $42.5 million, or $0.31 per diluted share reported in the second quarter of 2012. The carrier said that these results include $8.4 million of one-time pre-tax transition costs associated with WestJet's business transformation initiative. Air Canada is launching weekly seasonal flights between Halifax and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, beginning Dec. 14, 2013 and continuing until the end of April, 2014. AC will operate flights on Saturdays using 97-seat Embraer E190 aircraft offering a choice of Executive or Economy Class service and featuring complimentary seatback entertainment throughout the aircraft. ROUGE TO CHARGE FOR ONBOARD ENTERTAINMENT
Air Canada rouge is advising agents that as of Aug. 1 a $5 fee will be charged for unlimited access to its in-flight entertainment system. Passengers will need to download the Air Canada App to access all in-flight entertainment if using an Apple iPad, iPhone or iPad touch. The app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store. If using a PC laptop, Adobe Flash Player will need to be installed. A limited number of iPads loaded with the Air Canada App will be available for rent onboard aircraft for a fee of $10, plus the $5 fee to access premium entertainment. ALBERTANS TO FLY NON-STOP TO ALOHA STATE
WestJet has once again leased two Boeing 757-200 aircraft from Thomas Cook Airlines to deliver non-stop, daytime service between Calgary and Honolulu, Calgary and Maui, and between Edmonton and Maui. Pending regulatory approval, flights are scheduled to begin Dec. 13 and continue through April 26, 2014. Flights between Calgary and Honolulu will operate twice weekly, between Calgary and Maui four times weekly and between Edmonton and Maui three times weekly. WESTJET ENHANCES WINTER SCHEDULE
WestJet is adding four new non-stop routes, two new year-round routes and increased frequency on 29 existing routes as part of its 2013-2014 winter schedule.
