Kevin Spacey Brings Star Power to Tianguis

The connection to Mexico was a bit tenuous, but there was no doubting the star power of special guest speaker Kevin Spacey at this year’s Tianguis Turistico trade fair and conference.

Hollywood A-list actor Spacey had no problem drawing a capacity crowd to the main theatre at the Lakam Convention Center in the Riviera Maya region of the Yucatan Peninsula. Although it was billed as a press-only gathering, available seats were filled by buyers, suppliers and conference staff.

They mostly heard Spacey recount various career highlights, but his principal mission was to promote his most recent project, a documentary covering the creation and presentation of Richard III on stage, with Spacey in the lead role.

As for Mexico, Spacey expressed his love for the country, while admitting it was his first time in Cancun – Riviera Maya. He described some of Mexico’s filmic high points, including Night of the Iguana, which is credited with the sparking the tourism industry in Puerto Vallarta.

And he encouraged film producers to bring their bank rolls to Mexico.

“More films and music videos are being shot here now,” said Spacey. “Now is a great time to invest in Mexico.”
