UPDATED: London-bound Air India flight crashes with 242 on board

An Air India flight bound for London, England, crashed earlier this morning at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, India.

In a statement posted to its website, the airline confirms that Flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to London, Gatwick was involved in a crash shortly after takeoff on June 12, outside the airport. All 242 passengers and crew aboard the Boeing 787-8 aircraft are presumed dead.

The Associated Press reports that at least one Canadian was on board the flight, which crashed just five minutes after takeoff.

The cause of the crash has not been determined at this time. “We are in contact with Air India regarding Flight 171 and stand ready to support them,” Boeing said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the passengers, crew, first responders and all affected.”

The airport remains operational, with limited flights.

Passengers have been advised to check with their respective airlines for the latest updates before proceeding to the airport.
