Nova Gorica, Gorizia celebrate first Borderless European Capital of Culture

Where borders once divided them, today Nova Gorica, the youngest city in Slovenia, and its neighbour Gorizia in Italy,  will come together to celebrate one of the most spectacular and ambitious art, culture, and creativity experiences worldwide:  the first-ever European Capital of Culture without borders.

The official opening ceremony for GO! 2025 is set for Feb. 8, 2025, aligning with Slovenia’s Day of Culture. The event will feature the From Station to Station procession, symbolically linking the cities of Nova Gorica and Gorizia.

Highlights of the year-long program include the cross-border March for Europe (May 1 to May 9), held simultaneously in multiple towns, and the Tastes Without Borders festival (September 26 to Sept. 28), celebrating culinary diversity.

The year-long celebration will culminate with the Enlightened Closing Ceremony (Dec. 1 to Dec. 3), showcasing breathtaking light installations across both cities.

This cultural stage promises awe, fun, inspiration, and unique landscapes in the heart of Europe. From fashion, exhibitions, performances, music and concerts, theater, ecology and sustainable development, film, architecture, cuisine, technology, to sports; 2025 will be marked by culture in Nova Gorica, a Slovenian town with a vibrant identity, that has flourished since the end of World War II and it is just 100 km from the capital city, Ljubljana.

The official program, Go!2025, showcases a diverse array of creative and innovative installations, exhibitions, and events, all centred around thought-provoking themes: War and Peace, the Creation of the New, Smugglers, and Very Green.
