Tucan Travel has set up shop in Toronto, with the soft adventure travel company convinced its first permanent physical presence Canada can enable it to make inroads in what it says is a growing interest among Canadians in non-mainstream vacations.

The company, which began by sending clients to South America some 30 years ago, leading to the Spanish spelling of toucan that it adopted for its name, already has offices in Britain, Sydney and Cuzco, Peru, as well as an operations team in Bangkok.

Sam Dance, Tucan’s sales manager, says Tucan already has a “strong loyal client base in Canada and we are investing in the market by opening a new office and locating a res team here.”

Tucan bills itself as “the Latin America specialists,” but sends people to other parts of the world, such as Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe.
Tony Perdomo, Tucan’s North American director, says he’s convinced Tucan’s Canadian profile is on the upswing, thanks in part to his visiting travel agents across the country over the past three years.

Tucan tours include a 5.5-month South American tour on Tucan’s “Expedition Vehicle,” with clients also able to book segments of that trip. That full itinerary includes the likes of Peru’s Inca Trail, Bolivia’s Salt Flats and Iguazu Falls.

Other lengthy trips include 11-week Ultimate Eastern Europe, 51-day Best of Africa, 71-day Best of Myanmar and South East Asia and 49-day Grand Mexico & Panama. Segments of those tours – designed for those 18 and over – can also be booked.
“Lots of people are getting tired of the all-inclusives and since they are getting more holidays, they want to experience a country for what it has to offer, versus just going to the resort,” Perdomo says.

“We offer great soft adventure tours that are more cultural and get you to see the country for what it is and, having a local viewpoint, you will walkaway with a great sense of experiencing the destination.”

Tucan is now running a competition exclusively for Canadian travel agents that offers two spaces on the tour operator’s Costa Rica Encompassed tour. Information can be found at http://www.tucantravel.com/agent-competiton. Agents will automatically be entered every time they book a client with Tucan through May.

Tucan now has a 24-hour, Monday-Friday reservations team in place here that can be reached at 1-855-566-8660. The tour operator can also be contacted at [email protected].
