WestJet, Government End Talks On Financial Support

After several months of constructive discussions, the WestJet Group and the federal government have mutually agreed to shift focus from these negotiations, and away from taxpayer-funded support, to leading the safe restart of the travel and tourism sector.

The decision by the company that it is not actively pursuing financial support from the federal government comes with the encouraging rise of vaccination rates across the country,

However, both WestJet and the federal government remain open to resuming financial support discussions in the future.

The company also said that it was encouraged by the government’s announcements on July 19 that prioritize fully vaccinated travellers.

Since the onset of the pandemic, WestJet said in a statement, we have been advocating for a plan that supports the safe restart of air travel and today’s announcement by the government is a significant and positive step forward.

It noted that WestJetters have worked hard in assisting with vaccination efforts and we will continue to work collaboratively with the federal government to ensure these new policies allow us to safely welcome international travellers once again.

And its statement concluded: “On behalf of our employees, communities and our guests, we remain committed to ensuring our investments drive Canada’s economic recovery.”
