Acapulco takes centre stage at 2026 Tianguis

Tourism officials in Mexico’s oldest resort destination of Acapulco are hoping that the city’s hosting Mexico’s annual tourism show of Tianguis will help renew interest in the coastal city.

Tianguis is now underway, drawing tourism industry personnel from around the world and showcasing Acapulco, long famed as an international glamor spot but which has since lost market share to newer Mexican destinations.

‘If people come to Acapulco we will really appreciate it,” said local tour guide Jorge Guerrero while leading a group of Tianguis delegates on a walking tour of the city

Guerrero said the number of foreigners visiting his city has fallen noticeably, something he blames in part on limited promotion of Acapulco and reduced air service to the city.

Guerrero insisted his city remains safe and attractive for visitors, reporting that National Geographic named Acapulco Bay the fourth most beautiful bay in the world.

Guerrero said a city frequently associated with cliff divers and discos has many lesser-known draws, including botanical gardens, museums and a massive 18th-century fort.

“Every time they (tourists) come they can find something different,” he said. “It’s still beautiful.”

Meanwhile, Acapulco native Piquis Rochin — long a stalwart in Acapulco tourism promotion — said she’s pleased to see Tianguis return to her hometown after being held in Tijuana last year.

The show was first held in Acapulco 50 years ago.

“I’m very proud, ” she said.  “This is home for Tianguis.”
