The Liberation Route Europe – which tells of the Allied advance in much of northern Europe during World War II – has a such strong presence in Holland that the country has been dubbed “Normandy of the North.”

“There are so many traces of the battles that were fought in Holland (that) you can really get in touch with what happened during the war [by following the route],” says the Route’s Jeroen van Wieringen. “You can go to the museums, the audio sites, the landscapes [where fighting occurred] and meet people.”

The route has garnered increased attention this year with the 70th anniversary of VE Day on May 8.
