Madeira looks to grow its Canadian business

Travel trade types in Toronto had a chance to learn more about Madeira — an autonomous region of Portugal, that’s an archipelago comprising 4 islands off the northwest coast of Africa.

Known for its Madeira wine as well as its warm, subtropical climate, the main island of Madeira is volcanic, green and rugged, with high cliffs, pebbly beaches and settlements on deltas of the Fajã River.

Funchal is the capital, and is known for its harbour, as well as its botanic gardens and New Year’s fireworks show.

While Bernardo Goncalves of the Madeira Promotion Board, told the group, gathered on the rooftop lounge of Toronto’s Bisha Hotel, that there was no direct air connection from Canada to Madeira, it was still easily accessible with Air Canada, TAP Air Portugal and Azores Airlines through connections in Portugal as well as with a variety of carriers through European hubs.

Once there, visitors will find a wide range of things to do, according to Goncalves, who pointed to exploring Funchal’s old town, farmer’s market and various gardens; enjoying Madeira’s culinary offerings and wine; exploring its natural offerings; hiking and walking; jeep tours; mountain biking; golf (Madeira has 3 courses with a fourth coming soon); beach and ocean activities include sailing, diving, surfing and more.

Plus he pointed out that there are lots of festivals and events including Madeira’s annual New Year’s fireworks; it’s Carnival; Flower festival; Christmas markets and more.
