Shangri-La launches ‘Care for Panda’ project
Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts planted the first bamboo tree last month in a new 1.6-hectare bamboo plantation it is sponsoring in Sichuan province in China as part of Shangri-La's Care for Panda project. The Hong Kong-based luxury hotel group, which operates 35 hotels in mainland China, marked the occasion in Chengdu with a signing ceremony. The plantation is attached to the Dujiangyan Giant Panda Rescue and Disease Control Centre, which is located at the foot of Mount Qing Cheng and is a one-and-a-half-hours' drive from Chengdu. Palm Island Resort to reopen Jan. 15
A small electrical generator fire on Dec. 24 forced the closure of Palm Island Resort in Florida, but officials have announced that the resort will reopen on Jan. 15. The generator fire resulted in a loss of electrical power on the island, but no injuries were reported and the fire was confined to the back-of-the-house generator area, away from guest accommodations. In-house guests were relocated to resorts on nearby islands, including St. Lucia and Barbados. Hilton has opened its newest property in China's Pearl River Delta - Hilton Zhongshan Downtown. IBEROSTAR Hotels & Resorts has completed remodelling and refurbishment work on the IBEROSTAR Mojito, the Mallorca-based chain's ninth hotel in Cuba.
