Cuban tourism giant Gaviota is reaching out in a major way to travel agents in this country as the busy winter season draws closer.
Gaviota – which accounts for nearly half of all hotel rooms in Cuba and has other holdings that include a tour division and marinas – held a Toronto event Tuesday that drew a large number of representatives from household-name hotel brands on the island and is now headed for Montreal for a similar event.

Cuba's Gaviota Tourism Group has put a new face on an Old Havana landmark that it says adds another upscale dimension to the Cuban capital.
Gaviota's vice-president of marketing Frank Pais Oltuski Rodriguez told a Monday Toronto audience that developments for the Cuban tourism powerhouse include the just-opened 321-room Iberostar Grand Hotel Packard, which Gaviota says provides a “new standard of luxury” in Havana. The building itself dates back to 1911 but the now-Iberostar property underwent a major renovation prior to its opening.

Transat A.T. Inc. reports it has purchased land, and has entered into a promissory agreement to purchase a second adjacent property, in Puerto Morelos on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula for between US$54 and US$57 million to build a beachfront resort.
The promissory agreement is subject to certain usual conditions and is anticipated to close on or around Nov. 1.
Located on the Riviera Maya, the village of Puerto Morelos is midway between Cancún and Playa del Carmen, about 20 km from Cancún International Airport.
